RSPO Certified: The meaning behind the accreditation

Being RSPO certified means that as a business, you’re taking all the steps necessary to ensure that your supply chain only uses sustainable, ethically sourced palm oil. With the ever-increasing need for raw materials to be produced without causing any harm to the environment or communities, making sure your beauty business is RSPO certified is more important than ever.

Palm oil is used widely all over the world, and in all kinds of different products, so with RSPO certified palm oil becoming more of a priority for consumers, now’s the time to start making your beauty brand even more sustainable.

Palm Oil Production

Palm oil is an incredibly versatile product, produced primarily in Africa and Asia. It’s used across industries, in products from pizza and doughnuts to shampoo and toothpaste. Palm oil is semi-solid at room temperature, which means it can ensure spreads and serums can keep their consistency. Palm oil can also give products a longer shelf life due to its resistance to oxidation, and it’s both odourless and colourless, which means it won’t affect the appearance or the smell of the products it’s used in. What’s more, palm oil is by far the highest yielding of all oil-based crops, so requires significantly less farming space to produce a lot more oil. All of these characteristics make palm oil incredibly desirable to manufacturers, but overuse has meant that palm oil production has been very damaging to the environment in the past, and that’s why many businesses are now looking to become RSPO certified.

Meaning of RSPO Certified

To be RSPO certified, this means you’re assuring your customers that the standard of palm oil production in your supply chain is sustainable. RSPO is the largest, independent, third-party standard for the consistent improvement of sustainability in the production of palm oil, and thanks to this, it’s now become the globally recognised standard for sustainable palm oil.

RSPO certified palm oil has been cultivated on land that has not been exploited and burned. This sustainable palm oil production consists of legal, economical, environmental and socially beneficial management, ultimately meaning that RSPO certified palm oil helps to minimise the negative impact on the environment, as well as communities within the palm oil-producing regions. This is done through the elimination of deforestation, expansion on peat, exploitation and the use of fire.

Businesses who wish to be RSPO certified must ensure that all organisations within their supply chain who claim to use RSPO certified sustainable palm oil are audited, in order to prevent overselling as well as the mixing of palm oil with non-sustainable palm products. In order to be RSPO certified, growers are evaluated every five years, and if they are already RSPO certified, they are assessed every year to ensure their continued compliance.

In order for growers to be RSPO certified, they must adhere to the following eight principles:

  • Commitment to transparency

  • Compliance with applicable laws and regulations

  • Commitment to long-term economic and financial viability

  • Use of appropriate best practices by growers and millers

  • Environmental responsibility and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity

  • Responsible consideration of employees, and of individuals and communities affected by growers and mills

  • Responsible development of new plantings

  • Commitment to continuous improvement in key areas of activity

Benefits for Business

When an organisation is RSPO certified, they are actively assisting in the better utilisation of resources and systematic management practices. This can ultimately lead to higher profits, and smoother operations. Showcasing yourself as a sustainable business will bring an array of benefits, particularly when it comes to your environmental practices.

Given how popular sustainable organisations are with today’s consumers, this awareness of the environment will ultimately allow your business to welcome growth and brand awareness. More and more consumers are putting sustainability at the top of their lists, so making sure your beauty business is RSPO certified will ensure you’re increasingly appealing to a growing customer base. Showing yourself as sustainable will grab the attention of an increasing, ethical audience, bringing more interest to your brand and more footfall through your door.

Becoming an RSPO certified business will bring lower greenhouse gas emissions, and has also been shown to improve waste management, extraction rates and lower biodiversity impacts, meaning your company will naturally become more ethical, as well as kinder to the environment and those living within it. What’s more, being RSPO certified will bring higher productivity levels of palm oil production, and will also encourage better well being among the growers and your employees, especially when they know they are working towards a common good.

Here at Orean, we’ve been working with RSPO for some time. We collaborate with our suppliers to make absolutely sure that the palm oil we use is sustainable, ethical, from authorised sources and fairly priced. Given the efficiency and productivity of the palm oil plants, avoiding this raw material altogether is not helpful for the environment or for the farmers who grow it. The answer is ensuring that every drop of palm oil is sustainably and responsibly produced, and that’s exactly what Orean and other RSPO certified organisations are working towards. The palm oil we use in our products is RSPO certified and also complies with Mass Balance Grades, ultimately ensuring that as well as our organisation, all of our suppliers also use sustainable palm oil in their production. If you’re looking to become a more ethically-minded beauty brand to keep up with consumer demand, get in touch with our Orean experts and together we’ll work towards sustainable skincare.
