Ethics in Beauty: Sustainable Palm Oil at Orean

Sustainable palm oil is starting to make waves in the beauty industry at a powerful rate, and here at Orean, we make sure we’re always on the cusp of what’s coming around the cosmetic corner. We’ve always strived for ethical beauty, so sustainable palm oil is something we’ve been using for a long time already. There are many beneficial uses for palm oil within the beauty industry, and with it being one of the most efficient oils out there, it’s important to always use and purchase sustainable palm oil.

Seeking Sustainable Palm Oil

Palm oil has a number of incredible properties which make it a useful and versatile ingredient in everything from cosmetics to cars. However, its popularity has led to large-scale deforestation, habitat loss and a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, so now it’s time to only seek sustainable palm oil. The harmful effects on the environment are largely down to the ways in which palm oil is produced, and so it’s possible for sustainable palm oil to be produced in a way that’s respectful of both the environment and the communities it’s grown in.

Many people across the world rely on palm oil in order to earn a wage and make a living, and so boycotting it completely would destroy the livelihoods of thousands of people. What’s more, avoiding palm oil altogether could lead companies to turn to alternative oils, which are even less sustainable in the ways they’re produced, and so, will only aggravate the current problem. The danger of taking palm oil away from the industries it’s used in is that it could lead to lower prices, which in turn would increase demand from less ethical markets, ultimately reducing the need for sustainable palm oil.

Palm oil is one of the most efficient and sustainable oils out there, and is certainly the most productive, as it requires significantly less land, so using it sensibly is the way forward for the environment and wildlife. What’s more, the entire palm oil plant can be used, meaning there’s very little in terms of waste. Whilst the oil itself is used in food, cosmetics and as biofuel, the shells are used for activated charcoal, and the trunks are used to create chipboard for furniture, making palm oil an incredibly productive crop. The Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil was set up in 2004 in order to make sure palm oil is both sustainable and ethical, whilst coming from authorised sources and being fairly priced, and since then, membership has increased significantly. This shows the demand for sustainable palm oil and the importance of striving to produce it, use it and purchase it.

How do we use Palm Oil?

In the beauty industry and here at Orean, sustainable palm oil is used in a number of products, for a variety of reasons. Firstly, palm oil is an incredibly useful preservative that increases the shelf life of many of the products it’s used in. As well as moisturising properties, palm oil has a wide range of features that allow it to be an incredibly useful asset to the beauty industry.

For skincare, palm oil acts as an emollient with antioxidant properties that reduce the appearance of aging, premature wrinkles and fine lines. It’s used in soap due to its ability to remove oil and dirt from hair and skin. The smoothing properties of palm oil make it an ideal ingredient for body butters and soaps. For haircare, palm oil is used as a conditioning agent that helps to restore the natural oils of the hair. It will soften hair without leaving it feeling greasy or sticky, and will make sure both hair and skin to feel soft and supple. Palm oil helps to repair and strengthen damaged hair whilst adding shine, improving moisture retention and encouraging the growth of thicker, longer and stronger hair.

Sustainable palm oil is used in many of our products here at Orean, as a foaming and cleansing agent, as an emulsifying agent that binds water and oil, and as an anti-caking agent that prevents lumps from developing in powdered products. As well as all these incredible features, palm oil is also odourless, making it the ideal ingredient for use in skin and hair care products.
